Saxon

Guests - The Sword

To say that SAXON are one of metal's most influential bands would be no understatement. The band who along with Iron Maiden and Motorhead begun the movement now known as The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, have been cited by no lesser luminaries than Metallica and Slayer as a primary influence.

Being the trailblazing pioneers in any walk of life has its hazards and so it was that SAXON's over the top shows also inspired a young filmmaker by the name of Rob Reiner who made the world's first full-length mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap!

One of the foundations of the metal revival of the past ten years, THE SWORD have released two flawless slabs of vintage heaviness, toured the world with Metallica, and were one of the first bands to lock into a whole new legion of fans through Guitar Hero. This summer, the band casts its gaze to the stars for 'Warp Riders', their third full-length and most ambitious effort to date.

Warp Riders is THE SWORD’s first concept album. It's also their most flat-out, supercharged, adrenaline-pumping work yet, a chrome-plated war machine that lauds over the blackened sky. “Warp Riders” is a monster of an album with monster melodies, monster hooks, and monster riffs… an album overflowing in classic metal perfection.” – Metal Underground

Nevermore

“American-bred heavy metal doesn't get any better than this.” – Eduardo Rivadavia (Allmusic.com)

Seattle’s Nevermore have ensnared and entertained metal minds the world over for nearly two decades. With a string of seven critically acclaimed studio albums; Nevermore have etched out their own legend into the metal mythos. For the first time in 5 years, they will bring their impassioned brand of uncompromising heavy metal to Australian audiences. This will be the first chance for Australia’s metal maniacs to hear material from Nevermore’s latest release, “The Obsidian Conspiracy”, live in concert.

Since the release of their first album in 1995, critics and fans have debated how to describe Nevermore. Often called “thrash” or “progressive”, these labels are more limitations rather than descriptions. Nevermore encompass the sensibilities of traditional metal with emphasis on melody, complexity, aggression and energy. Their lyrics are conceptual, intelligent and dramatic, delivered with peerless power and conviction by vocalist Warrel Dane. Complimenting Dane are the guitar histrionics of the technical but tasteful virtuoso, Jeff Loomis. Rounding the band out are the ferociously tight rhythm section of bassist Jim Sheppard and drummer Van Williams. With as much emphasis on song writing as they place on musicianship, Nevermore have built their global following through extensive touring (with bands as diverse as Disturbed and Dream Theater) and the undeniable merits of their unique brand of twisted technical metal.

Over the past 15 years, Nevermore’s discography has grown in intricacy, intensity and quality. Albums such as 1996’s “The Politics of Ecstasy”, 2000’s “Dead Heart In a Dead World” and 2005’s “The Godless Endeavor” have been heralded as modern metal classics by both fans and critics alike. The band’s latest studio effort, “The Obsidian Conspiracy”, produced by Soilwork’s Peter Wichers, has been similarly acclaimed. Peter Carnbro (ultimate-guitar.com) found the album to be “…an extremely solid effort, that manages to bring something new to the band’s sound without completely altering it.” Scott Alisoglu (Blabbermouth.com) describes the album as “…another mighty release from the Seattle stalwarts.”

Nevermore return in 2011 is sure to be a highlight whether you’re head banging in the pit, or standing back in awe of the musicianship. This is one metal-heads won’t dare miss.

SAXON Pulls Out Of Australia's SOUNDWAVE Festival - Feb. 17, 2011

British heavy metal legends SAXON have pulled out of Australia's Soundwave festival due to delays in the recording sessions for the band's new studio album, "Call To Arms".

Commented the group: "We are, unfortunately, forced to cancel our Australia trip due scheduling problems with the new album recordings.

"We apologize for cancelling but due to the bad weather conditions we had in the U.K. during the recording sessions we have suffered various delays and we can't just drop the production and leave — we have producers booked and mix engineers waiting to finish the album, which is titled 'Call To Arms'.

"We have looked at this from all sides, but too many people are involved so we have made the choice to finish the album and we apologize again.

"We hope you can understand that we have not made this decision lightly."

The 2011 edition of Australia's Soundwave festival is set to take place in late February/early March.

SAXON is seeking a suitable record label to release the follow-up to 2009's "Into The Labyrinth" (SPV/Steamhammer), which will feature a guest appearance by legendary keyboardist Don Airey (DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW).

SAXON had a busy year in 2010, which included performing a blinding set at Download in June, where to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Monsters of Rock show, they played their legendary "Wheels of Steel" album in its entirety for the first time ever.

As is becoming an almost yearly custom for SAXON, they will perform at the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire in London on St. Georges Day, April 23, which promises to be a loud, rocking celebration of England's patron saint's day.

SAXON's last album, "Into The Labyrinth", sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The CD debuted at No. 29 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The CD was recorded at the Twilight Hall in Krefeld, Germany, under the direction of Charlie Bauerfeind.
