Hello  Cheesy,
I don't know if a similar topic exist already but i think it will be interesting, if it's possible, to learn more about the operation of a webradio like ERR.

Could someone can explain the global functionment of a web radio ?
I see that ERR is powered by shoutcast/icecast server but how does it work ?
Does it have copyright to pay ?

Thanking you in anticipation for the time you'll take answering me Grin.

 Ps: excuse my english Tongue.

Each web radio station is different.  I can tell you how many of them function, including how Epic Rock Radio works.

Some web radio stations are nothing more than a playlist in a media player stored on someone's home computer, pointed out at a reflector/stream host (Shoutcast, Icecast, etc) that rebroadcasts the stream to whomever tunes in.  Some are entirely cloud based, where you upload the music you want to broadcast to a server somewhere (Like, for example, Live365) and create playlists that select the songs to be played.

Epic Rock Radio is, in my opinion, one of the better stations out there, with integrated chat, and an automated request system with dedications.  There are a number of components to ERR, including a web server, a database engine, automation software (in this case the outstanding SAM Broadcaster) two reflector/stream hosts, one being an Icecast server and the other being Live365.

By itself, Shoutcast and Icecast can't really do anything besides rebroadcast a music stream that you are feeding to it, so saying that Epic Rock Radio is powered by Icecast is a bit like saying your car is powered by tires.  Icecast is only one component of the whole picture.  We need Icecast just like a car needs tires, but there'a lot more to it.

For ERR specifically, the logical layout looks like this:

Doesn't look as cool as your graphic, though.  :-)

As you can see, the Listeners directly interact only with the Local Web Server where the ERR website actually runs, and one of the two stream reflectors, (Live365 or Icecast)

Through the user's interaction with the Local Web Server, listeners indirectly interact with the shoutbox server, the automation software (for requests) and the album art server.

You're very welcome!  Keep in mind that most Internet radio stations are generally a lot less complex.  ERR is probably one of the most sophisticated stations of it's kind.  Many stations are much simpler, only requiring a few components and not much networking or programming skills.
