Title: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: arrowisb on April 28, 2011, 01:28:05 pm
Hey guys, hows it going? Alright, the point of this thread is pretty simple. Rate the song that is posted above you, on a scale from 1-10. If you have not heard the song LOOK IT UP!!! Feel free to say why you like, or dislike the song. Feel free to share any type of music, its not limited to the ERR list only. Next, post a new song for the next poster to look up.  Finally, please do not flame or troll other's taste in music!!  ;) And most importantly, have fun!

I got the idea for this thread from a gamers forum i frequent, and its a lot of fun, and a great way to discover new music.

Lets start with...hmm...Savatage- Handful of Rain  ;D

Happy posting!

This is a cool idea, I hope it catches on...

I had never heard the song before, so I youtubed it once, and after listening to it I think it was a nice song with a cool opening guitar part, but I'm not really into Savatage from what few songs I've heard. As far as semi-ballads like this go, it's not one of my favorites...but granted that's from one listen and probably not entirely fair to the song. But OH WELL! :-)

I think I would rate it a 5, but I give it an extra 1.5 for the awesome Manowar-ish album art, for a total score of 6.5.

Rate this song: The Lord of Wolves by Pathfinder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A34bNoP2BQM

Great idea this.
Being a lover for anything with classical elements, this is definitely one of those songs. The use of the keyboard gives it that classical feel yet the hard hitting drum beats and manic guitar riffs provide that lovely balance. The singers voice doesn't irritate at all and actually helps to carry that classical feel throughout the song. I would rate this song a 8.5 for its brilliant composition, delightful melodic tune & its extremely well done solos.

Rate this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVVlNCQ387Q  Neverland - Reversing Time

Wow, I have to say I enjoyed that song! I never listend to Neverland before, I will be doing so now :D Anyway, I give it a 8/10.

Hmm lets test the waters with this song..Insomnium - In The Groves of Death

Okay, I'd have to give Hatchy's tune an 8 or 9/10, especially with Mike Baker on vocals (RIP).  ;D

you did not give us a song to rate Lise >.>

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: ~V~ on May 03, 2011, 11:17:40 am
I like this idea, although I guess I'm not completely clear on the instructions.

To, RATE THE SONG ABOVE, does this mean any song above or the post directly above?  Because there are nothing but songs, "above"...  as I don't see any songs below... yet.   ;D

And, if you do rate a song, are you also required to add one to be rated, as well?

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: Knarl on May 03, 2011, 01:58:13 pm
I believe it makes the most sense to rate the song directly above, and also post a song for the next person to rate as well. That way there aren't double ratings and the game can go on perpetually if everyone is throwing out a new song after each rating. That being said, I could only make it through about 3 minutes of arrow's song before I couldn't stand the vocals anymore (not a fan of exclusively growly music), so hopefully someone else can give it a fair chance.

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: ~V~ on May 03, 2011, 03:02:05 pm
Yeah, when I first read Arrow's post, I thought it was meant to be the post directly above but had to be sure so that we all can travel the same road.

with that said... please, carry on  :P

Okay, so, the official rules are, rate the song in the post above you, and then present a new song for the next person to rate.

Well, in the absence of a song to rate, I'll give one.  Rate this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uraNxestKwQ

That's Jorn Lande singing with Masterplan, on a song titled "Black in the Burn".  Probably my favorite Masterplan track of all time.

Neverland - Reversing Time - 7/10 - I like the piano in this song.
Savatage - Handful of Rain - 2/10 - Never been a fan of Savatage.
Masterplan - Black in the Burn - 5/10 Never been much of a fan of Masterplan.

The one metal song that gives me shivers up my spine everytime I hear it would be Scorpions - Wind of Change.

I LOVE the Winds of Change.  That's like an "all time favorite" for me.  One of the greatest power ballads ever made, I think! 9/10.

Speaking of power ballads, rate this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYqWJQCptV0

That's Blind Guardian's "Nightfall", which is probably my favorite Blind Guardian song.  The chorus where they just belt out "Niiiiight-Faaaaaaaaaalll!" blows me away.

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: Muzz on May 04, 2011, 08:24:43 am
Firstly, I agree about Winds of Change. I can't believe that song is 20 years old!

Nightfall by Blind Guardian. I think it's okay, maybe a 7/10 for me. BG is still on my list of bands to check out more, especially that album.

Now, rate this one which I think may be one of the very best songs by a band with a lot of good songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVgZ3KtNd5Q

It's "The Clansman" by Iron Maiden and this one's not on ERR.

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: arrowisb on May 04, 2011, 10:14:51 am
7/10 for The Clansman, good solid Maiden.

Btw guys, the idea is to rate the song posted above you, and give a new song for the next poster to rate. My aplogies for not making that clear.

Freedom Call- Dark Obsession

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: The Eagle Warrior on May 05, 2011, 07:29:10 pm
Dark Obsession - 2/10. Freedom Call's old stuff is a lot better.

Whitesnake - Sailing Ships
David Coverdale's voice comes out great with this acoustic ballad.

5/10 for Whitesnake, never was a fan, song was okay overall.

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!

Whitesnake - Sailing Ships
5/10.

Thought the blending of baroque-flavored melodies and harmonies in the verses with the bluesier/rockier style of the chorus was an interesting juxtaposition, but it didn't really go anywhere in terms of either pitch or dynamics in either case until the very very end, and just kinda had me feeling "come on, come on, something should happen. keyboards or a second guitar could enter, or the voice could get louder or softer or higher or lower in pitch or SOMETHING to break it up."

I also thought the lyrics were a tad on the cheesy side, but given that it's a ballad by a hard-rock band in 1989, I hold that as par for the course, which I suppose a medium score of 5 reflects.

Next song is "Crash" by Bozzio Levin Stevens (whose members are... you guessed it! Terry Bozzio on drums, Tony Levin on bass, and Steve Stevens on guitar)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEYOiF4ObHw

EDIT: While I was writing up "Sailing Ships," arrowisb beat me to the punch. 8/10 for "Space Oddity." Love that tune, and the Star One cover is even better : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86N8Iu_xs70

Force Majeure - Gatecrusher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b1-JrPiJN8)
7/10. Good, fun, straight-ahead power-metal tune. Great wailing high notes from the singer. It kinda reminds me a little bit of some classic Helloween or something, although I can't quite place why.

Next up is "Man With No Name" by Derek Sherinian, featuring Tony Franklin on bass, Jerry Goodman on violin, Brian Tichy on drums, and Zakk Wylde on guitar and vocals

7/10 for your song, overall it was quite enjoyable.

Next up: The Last Journey - King of Asgard

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: Hatchy on June 08, 2011, 02:19:19 pm
As much as I loved the build up, I felt the solo singer at the beginning missed a few pitches in their singing. However, as soon as the guitars, drums and backing vocals came into play, wow it was an overload of the senses. Then the song drops its angelic introduction for a man with growly vocals. Being a man who actually likes this kind of singing (its growly but not like the man is swallowing a bucket of gravel) I found this song pretty pleasing. Riffs were good and drum beats were pounding. It was a real head banging tune imo.

Next up is; Gothic Knights - Up from the Ashes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7Kn1n5V0Sw

Title: Re: RATE THE SONG ABOVE!
Post by: Kailef on June 08, 2011, 07:17:59 pm
Weird.  Not was I was expecting from the intro.  Up until 1:19 I thought it was a prog metal song, but then it turns to pure powermetal.

As far as powermetal goes, its good.  I'd say a 7/10 for me.

Now, how about this...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sLaiNBbMBc

It's a live song from Jarkko Ahola (Of Terasbetoni / Northern Kings / Etc) in an acoustic gig with a good friend of his.

Even if you don't like it, you should wait for the end and check out the finale.  He does some really awesome stuff with his voice.

Ok Kalief, I found that to be pretty awsome. 9/10 for me, guy has a nice voice and style about him, and his music. Likely will be checking his stuff out further.

Up next, we have a classic:  Bathory-One Rode To Asa Bay

Bathory-One Rode To Asa Bay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47YkClJ-kII
6/10. I liked the way it builds, but at the same time, there's just something about it that doesn't suck me in and hold my attention as much as I feel like it should.

Now it's time for some fairy-tale prog-rock: "The Emperor's Clothes" by Spock's Beard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yviFJ-MA-zE

Its like Lenny Kravitz's voice went to the 70's! :) I give it a 7/10. Nice nostalgia feeling.

Now, how do you gents rate this: Moonspell - Luna - http://youtu.be/bwMf8rJ6VI8

Loved the 'old school riffs' that were used.

Visions of Atlantis - Eclipse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdiWhS-F_5E
Great symphonic elements, but some of the transitions between sections (e.g. from introduction into first verse) could have been handled better. Still, enjoyable overall, if not their best work. 6.5/10

Next is "Surrounded by Night" by Into Eternity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8EJv3SEEu8

Arrowisb:  Yeah, I know.  Not only do I like that song, but I think I'm going to be adding them to ERR.  How's that for unexpected?

Now... I believe that Megadeth is one of the most boring an uncreative metal bands ever!  Now, I know they are a pretty big name and all, but... Yeah.  So...  6/10.

Okay, now, more Arkan.....  Arkan - Tied Fates - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjEUI6viL80

2.5/10. Too sappy, singsong-y, and repetitive for my taste, but too well-performed to be a 1.

Up next, let's have "Under Fire" by Enchant

3/10, failed to grab my interest, and was a cover...would of been nice to see something created by this band itself.

next up: Coldplay- Clocks

( to the Coldplay haters: I love this song, if you dont like it, you have no sense in music. Just because its not thundering metal does not make it not good.)

"Under Fire" was a cover? Every source I've seen says it was written by two of the band members.

Therion- Son of the Sun- live.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvib_KtR9Iw
77/100 (yes, I changed metrics. I was going to give it a really specific decimal, but it looked silly).

The song rocks, and the performance is great. Nice groove, spot-on intonation they keep the tempo up, and unlike a number of live videos on YouTube, the audio is mixed quite well. Also, that's a nice gothic set they've got themselves to perform with onstage. Lotsa purdy candles.

I've always liked that song.  The chorus just kind of sticks with you, you know what I mean?  7 out of 10 for the chorus that has been playing in my head ever since I saw the name of the song.  Bang bang.

I should send an email to Jarkko Ahola and suggest that Northern Kings cover this song, now that I think about it.

Okay, how about this one!

That was awesome - It was incredibly relaxing to listen to, I loved it.  I like the way that they, unlike most metal bands, took the vocals and almost pushed them into the background, making them feel almost as though I was listening to the wind.  9 out of 10 from me.

That's pretty good.  Very good actually, 8/10 from me.  Apparently that's a solo act, too, which is pretty impressive as well.

Speaking of solo act...

Lots of people talk about Neil Peart being the best drummer ever.  He's awesome, no doubt, and there are a variety of really good drummers out here, especially prog-metal drummers.  However, I believe that Buddy Rich beats the living snot out of every last drummer I've ever seen.  I've never seen anybody do what he could do, ever.

A french symphonic (according to metallum :x). Unearth (2005), features former Dark Moor vocalist, Elisa Martin.

graverobber, graverobber  :D

ok, the youtube link for Cardiant - Royal Stranger says: The YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple reports from third parties of copyright infringement.

Unfortunately I was not able to find another version. But considering other songs from Cardiant it was probably ok/good ;)

7 / 10 from me.

Just so you know, it is really, REALLY rare for me to like a song that prominently features growling / death vocals, but I actually liked that song.  I still have no idea what they were singing about, mind you.  Even with the lyrics right there on the screen, I have no idea at all.

Okay, here's mine.  I warn you, this is not metal.  At all.  But check it out and let me know what you think.  :-)  (They feel, to me, like this generation's "Queen" and "Freddie Mercury")

6/10

That was a weird video but catchy too!  And, you're right, it kind of does have a "Queen" feel to it.  I like it

Don't break the chain, you need to leave another video for people to rate!

Yeah, I was in a hurry.    I'll do it now.

This track, Distance, is from Evergrey's new album, The Storm Within, which, I think might be pretty good.

Not being a big Evergrey-Fan I would still give this a solid 6.5/10 (please don't throw stones)

And here we have the newest masterpiece of the great icelandic band SK┴LMÍLD

The song is called Niavellir

(not sure if they are singing about furniture  ;D )
