i'm kind of iffy on the new SA album, i like some of it, dont really care for other stuff, but sonata is sonata.

I've loved all thier covers i've heard (havn't heard the one on unia).

sonata has been one of my fav bands since i started listening to power metal, and it'll remain such for a looong time.  I look forward to see'ing them again in february(less than 2 weeks \o/)

my favorites song to date by SA include thier covers (all of them), Wildfire, My Selene, Tallulah, and Shy.  ofc there are others, but those are the top ones in my books.

Now that I've had enough time to listen to Unia all the way through repeatedly, I have a solid opinion.

It's my favorite Sonata Arctica album by a wide margin.

Why?  Obviously a lot of the music isn't quite the same as their older stuff, but, that's why I like it.  Their old stuff is solid, quality powermetal, some of the best out there.  But Unia adds complexity that they didn't have before.  Some of their songs remind me of Thy Majestie or Symphony X with their time changes and layered vocals.  Great stuff, I think.

maybe i just need to listen to the new album more often, though i'm a crazy fan of thier older stuff.. victoria's secret, ain't your fairytale, wildfire, san sebatian (original and revisited), and the list goes on and on (till you got damn near every album and single leading up to unia) Tongue

Hey Guys,

I really think that this "wow, so different" thing is overated. Just as much as "complexity". It all comes down to the songs. And, like it or not, if one tends to get bored then it couldn't be good stuff. Nothing against change, but for SA it was a change for the worst, IMO. Anyway, respect ! Glad my EER buddies are enjoying SA.

I figured out what it is that doesn't interest me about Unia.

It's the same old Sonata Arctica vocals I've heard on every one of their albums.  His singing is exactly the same, the group vocals are exactly the same, almost no variance in the vocal style at all.  I'm quite sure that I'd like the album if I listened to it enough to become familiar with the shifts and changes, as with Thy Majestie or Wuthering Heights - but the vocals keep me from having an interest in listening to it more often.

I don't hate it, it just doesn't interest me, that's all.  -shrugs-   But hey, if you like it, rock on.  Smiley

Ah, I loved it! (The first part more than the second, but it's always like that the first twenty-three times you hear it).  Grin

The words are weird though (which is what I find very intriguing about Sonata. Like this one:

"Now I will hit you where it hurts take what is rightfully mine,
I need a sign that you're worth fighting for"

Ah well, I guess it still doesn't beat this:

"Walking in the cool night air without underwear
You have red light burning in your soul, I've seen the glow"

Ahh, gotta love Sonata!
