Epic Rock Radio is the place for epic music but how many of us know all the epic tracks available here on ERR.

Please list your favourite epic tracks in this thread.

I'm not looking just for long songs as length does not always equate with epicness. I'm looking for the sound, lyrical or production qualities that make something epic.

Ooooh.  I totally will have to do a list here, but since I'm at work right now I don't have time.  I'll do it later.  :-)

Epic songs.  I can't make a top 10, it's just not possible for me.  The following list isn't even vaguely complete, and it's not notated with my usual commentary about each song, but... check it out.  If your tastes are anything like mine, you'll like what you hear.  The first section is very NON metal, though.  You've been warned.

------------------ First, the stuff that I think is incredible, but is not on (and probably won't ever be on) Epic Rock Radio:

Weird Al Yankovic - It's All About The Pentiums - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMvS1Q1sos
Freaking hilarious.

Buddy Rich and his Orchestra - Time Check
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZCvG1vJ3z0
Buddy Rich is the best drummer who ever lived.  If you think otherwise, you're wrong.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q3H2UQYLzM
Everybody gives Meat Loaf a hard time.  Just put some ketchup on it, and it'll be fine.  Chill out.

Jon Schmidt and Stephen Sharp Nelson - Love Story meets Viva La Vida
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXtVBJDPs6k

Chingon - Malaguena Salerosa (Live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gyp8Us-ixkk

Chanticleer - Franz Biebl's Ave Mariia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVyCJlPiHFg

Public Image Limited - The Order of Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJWmx2jP0OE

Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw6_VXPwm6U

Oingo Boingo - Just Another Day (Live / Farewell Concert)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw6_VXPwm6U

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIF4_Sm-rgQ

Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé  - Barcelona
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsB4a--WRTs

Death Metal Chicken - Cockadoodle Doom
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UXEj8-2QT4

Sting and Dominic Miller - Shape of my Heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6VyvTaX8NE

--------------- Okay, now the epic metal songs:

Ark - Heal The Waters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9zFICL-Lng
Ark's best song, and epic in it's own right.

Blind Guardian - Nightfall
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYqWJQCptV0
The vocals on the chorus give me chills.

Nature Boy (Live) - Jarkko Ahola
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_z_EHHT9U4
Just let it play until the end.  This is why Jarkko is one of my favorite singers.

Queen - Save Me (Live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqitFnUZ2lU

Queen - Somebody to Love (Live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ar76dXfV5g

Prelude - Symphony X
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmm4H-rOoYs
Really, this entire album is one really long song, but this song sets the stage.

Wuthering Heights - Faith (Apathy Divine Part 1)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcJ7Uw0LBMA
The only word to describe it is epic.

Yes - Heart of the Sunrise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsRdT9hwqGs
The only word to describe this is also epic.

Queen - Flash Gordon Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS4_Z84-rRE

Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp0rQNJn0S0

Masterplan - Black in the Burn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uraNxestKwQ

Teräsbetoni - Metallisydän
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0o5C_DyX-Fo

Angra - Deus Le Volt! & Spread Your Fire
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDsMLy4Tq64

Angra - The Shadow Hunter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4Nveiu54mY

Angra - Sprouts of Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtmjZ-NrDrs

Muse - Knights Of Cydonia (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sclt7c5DUe4

Thy Majestie - The Pride Of A Housecarl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfg-JZkOLCs

Sonata Arctica - My Dream's But a Drop of Fuel For a Nightmare
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5P53ozwaec

Rush - Double Agent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6D4mxbUnmg

Rush - The Manhattan Project
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf_nJz5fKpo

Rush - I Can't Decide
http://90%_of_their_entire_freaking_discography.com

Haggard - All inizio e La Mort
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKDrtq0dyZw

Areyon - Pain
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plkne8iNYx0

Kamelot - Pendulous Fall
http://www.youtube.com/my_favorites?sf=none&sa=0&pi=2

Kamelot - Wander
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jn4nzFmyNfw

Falconer - Northwind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ayypMO4vJ4

Seventh Wonder - Hide and Seek
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BotnJZ4EFfQ

Seventh Wonder - The Black Parade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7BJzB2-XMQ

Luca Turilli - Demonheart (vocals by Andre Matos)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ja_wtTEN2M

Allen/Lande - Master of Sorrow
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CC7ORajoy4

Sabaton - Primo Victoria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrJAwCBbnuc
Yeah, I know, I usually go for the more complex songs.  But really, this is awesome.

Saviour Machine - Love Never Dies

Fun fact: This track is a metallized version of the beginning of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem, which is plenty epic in its own right.

Well, some great tracks listed there by Kailef and I wouldn't disagree about the quality of those I know.

A couple of points, I'm not familiar with Oingo Boingo and was gonna check it out but the link is to Kansas.
Secondly, I know what you're saying about Meatloaf. He was good in his day but unfortunately can no longer sing.
That's bad news for those of us in Australia who endured his performance at the AFL Grand Final last week (Superbowl equivalent)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-DTlEuKOe0

Whilst, I appreciate the post, unfortunately most of these tracks are not what I was really after for this thread.

This is the dictionary definition of epic I'm thinking about.

epic
adjective Also, epical.

1. denoting or relating to poetic composition in which a series of heroic achievements or events, usually of a hero, is dealt with at length as a continuous narrative in elevated style: Homer's `Iliad' is an epic poem.
2. resembling or suggesting such poetry.
3. heroic; imposing; impressive.

noun

4. an epic poem.
5. any novel or film resembling an epic, especially one dealing with the adventures and achievements of a single individual.
6. something worthy to form the subject of an epic: the epic of the defence of Stalingrad.
7. (capital) Also, Homeric.
the Greek dialect represented in the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Therefore, The Odyssey by Symphony X is the very epitome of an epic track. It is imposing and impressive. It's long because it's all about a journey.
I'm looking for long (mostly) impressive tracks with a big sound, possibly with choirs that have different parts, showing light and shade.

Here are some examples.

Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum
Stratovarius - Destiny
Avantasia - The Scarecrow
Blind Guardian - And Then There Was Silence
Shadow Gallery - Ghostship
Gamma Ray - Heading for Tomorrow
Helloween - The King for 1000 Years

I know there are plenty more, these are just off the top of my head.

Not necessarily Eagle. There are plenty of long tracks in progressive metal but that just makes them long, not epic according to my definition. There are others that just become a snooze fest, like one particular overplayed 30 minute song.

But fair warning on that Meatloaf link, it's not pretty.

Can we all agree that these songs fit into this category?

Fairyland - Score to a New Beginning

Stratovarius - Elements

Elvenking - Rouse Your Dream

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls

Dream Theater - Octavarium

Edguy - Theater of Salvation

Avantasia - The Seven Angels/The Wicked Symphony

Luca Turilli - King of the Nordic Twilight

Sonata Arctica - White Pearls, Black Oceans

There's a lot more but here's a few to start off with..

I agree, absolutely. I'm not familiar with Elvenking though so I'm off to check that out. Thanks Hatchy.

It starts off so epically and carries on through to the end of the song (imo at least). Plus I wanted that short list to not have the lengthy titled songs in it as well  >D
