I have no idea if it would cost a lot more to do, but is there any chance that we will see bitstream higher than 64K?

Most of our streams are 128k MP3, actually.

Loudcaster is the only stream we broadcast at 64k.  (And Loudcaster is going out of business in October and will be gone, anyhow)

The Live365 stream as well as the direct and flash player streams are 128k.

I am listening to the radio stream via the .PLS file. Although the stream presents itself at 128 Kbps, I frequently get the impression that some songs are up-sampled from 64 Kbps or that the stream is not true 128 Kbps. I know how most of the songs sound like when listening an 128 Kbps MP3 file, so I really think there's something happening that is interfering with the sound quality.

The entire music library is resampled on the fly to 128k MP3 when broadcasted if it is not already a 128k MP3.  We have 128 WMA, and 256 MP3 and a variety of other media formats in the library.  That said, none of the source files are lower than 128k MP3s, there aren't any 96k or 64k songs.

The net effect of the on-the-fly resampling does cause a bit of a sound quality drop, but unfortunately there's not really anything we can do about it without re-ripping our entire library.  Worse, at this point much of our library is entirely digital, without a CD to go with it.
