Everyone,

As you've surely all noticed, the Shoutbox that we subscribe to has been really flaky as of late.  It's hosted by a company called Shoutmix and they've been going online and offline for a few days now.

I was hoping that everything would work fine and the problem would go away, since they've been rock solid for us for years and years.  Unfortunately however the issue has been happening intermittently for almost a week, so I'm concerned that they are never going to fix the problem / are going out of business.

If any of you know a good alternative to Shoutmix, I'd love to hear your suggestions.  It needs to be something that we can integrate in to our system so it shows up on the main page just like our current Shoutbox does.

I hate to get rid of our old shoutbox because it's done great for us for many years, but I think the time may be arriving.

So, if you know of any good alternatives, please, let me know here in this thread.

Okay, here is the official word from Shoutmix:  They are going out of business at the end of the month.  We need a replacement right away:

"IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
ShoutMix Web Services will cease all its operations permanently on May 31, 2017.
ShoutMix has stayed in service for as long as possible but the service has finally come to an end.
The platform and most of the software involved have reached their end of life."

Anyone have any suggestions?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Just reposting the links from the shoutbox so they don't get lost.

not sure if any of these would be a feasible option

The new shoutbox seems fine but the colo scheme is a little distracting and if you could shout with the return button (its a matter of convenience) also we absoluterly need the old emoticons.
As you know a whole world is built upon them Smiley

PS.The size of the chat "boxes" uses too much space so less fit in the box..

All - With regard to the Shoutbox we're testing now, no need to comment on the emoticons.  We can add them all to this Shoutbox, but it will take me many hours of time to upload them and set them up.  So, I'm not going to do that until we've made a final decision to keep this new Shoutbox or not.  :-)

There are some other options out there for us to test as well.

I personally find the new shoutbox really difficult to read, especially with the text modifications people are doing left and right.

All the shoutboxes seem to have options for glowing and moving text, this one and the other two I'm looking at, as well.  From what I can see, there's no option to turn it off, either.  Grr.

Once the newness wears off, I think a large percentage of over-using the bells and whistles will diminish some.

I like it so far, and I like the colors and glowing that some don't care for, hahaha.  Grin It is already superior in that it hasn't failed all day, so there's that. Can't think of any issues that the others haven't mentioned.

Pros:
customized name handles are kind of cool, reminds me of my Quake days
EDIT: I am digging some of the additional text properties (spoiler tags, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, Marker, colors)
EDIT: reference specific chat entries should be useful

Cons:
missing emoticons (I know that is just a matter of re-adding)
unable to navigate in past chat history, or easily anyway
EDIT: some additional text properties need to be disabled (blinking text, moving text)

I would propose some sort of integration with the "slack" chat service if possible. We use it at work and I think it is the best of all implementations out there. I don't know if they support embedded webpage presence, but if they do I volunteer to get that working here.

Update:  Here are the problems I've encountered so far.

1. They seem to have a limit of 100 total smilies.  I'm asking their support team if they can add more for us.  The last 25 or so wouldn't fit when I added them today.

2. Am I blind, or is there nowhere to see the names of the people currently logged in to the shoutbox?  I miss being able to actually see who I'm chatting with.

3. Still no apparent way to integrate the ERR account with the shoutbox account like we did with the old shoutbox.  It's not a terribly big deal though, you just need to sign up for a shoutbox account before you can chat.

FeuerFrei, I hunted around and I wasn't able to find a good Slack integration solution.  There were a few but they were mostly widgets that you had to click to make "pop up" over the site itself.  I'm pretty dead-set on the chat being integrated like it is now.  If you can come up with a way to make it work, though....  The only thing is that the smilies are a huge part of ERR culture that I'm not sure it'll work well.  You can create custom emoji with Slack but they resize it to make it fit inside a row of text.

Still, if we can make it work, it'd be nice.
